The Pearl River Delta is not a place you would think to look up to discover electronic music, let alone immerse in it. But besides what used to be the bustling city of Hong Kong (now stuck by pandemic-safety measures), Shenzhen lies right across the border and is yearning for the attention of its underground movements.

Released a week ahead of schedule, Unchained’s latest compilation titled “The Remixes” is a 16-track journey that gives high attention to young and fresh talent while paying homage to the best remixes of the label to date.

The musical spectrum of this compilation is impressively wide, touching on minimal, glitch and half-time beats, and still managing to make way for liquid grooves and rampant, fast-paced bass music. There’s stuff on here that we’ve never quite heard before, and we quite like that, namely the Dead End Remix of Subp Yao’s ‘Backwitda’. And while still being familiarly comforted by the sounds of China’s Radiax, China-based Italian trio Fractale and a host of other accomplished beat makers.

Claiming their precedence as South China’s regional leader of quality drum’n’bass over the last few years, Unchained is one of the go-to promoters for electronic hedonists. They’re actually branched in Hong Kong too, but with events on a hiatus, the focus has been on Shenzhen of recent. Unchained’s founders Daniel Power and Lyndon Jarr have carved a healthy and vibrant scene for bass music across South China, mainly by developing the scene through events and importing international talent, and then focusing on Unchained Recordings over the last two years.

Unchained Recordings present ‘The Remixes’ compilation. This is a 16 track exploration of sound, encompassing a slew of fresh music by some insanely fresh talent as well as a collection of the label’s best remixes to date.

With a universal roster of artists from China, Europe, UK and the States, Unchained Recordings ‘The Remixes’ LP continues to forward the label’s aim of discovering and embodying unique forms of fast bass music whilst staying true to the foundations of Drum and Bass.

Representing China, both Radiax and 3ASIC reinterpret two of the label’s biggest tunes by OAKK and HØST. Resonating with elements of rolling Drum & Bass, Jump Up, Juke and Hardcore. From the UK, WhineyRohaan, HØST and Arkaik deliver various mutations of grit – spanning minimal, glitch, halftime and liquid. Continuing to explore fertile new ground, contributors from Europe also exhibit their rich diversity in all things electronic. From modular wubs to halftime gems to leftfield bangers Was a be, FractaleBlack Barrel, Kabuki and Supb Yao probe fresh hybrid terrain. Stateside, Doctor Jeep continues his unfolding journey into Drum & Bass whilst Sinistarr meditates firmly on his Detroit roots.

They’re also honoured to include the Unchained remix comp winners, Yoofee and Dead End, offering their outstanding takes on Supb Yao’s ‘Backwitda’. We’re sure you’re going to like this latest release. Hopefully, post-COVID dance floors will be able to get a taste as soon as the time is right!

If one thing is certain, no one does it quite like Unchained. Working sublimely across beats, Drum & Bass, halftime, 160 and more, the Asian imprint have cemented their place as one of the most impressive, standout labels of the last couple of years, embedding themselves into the global electronic psyche. On a local and national scale in China, they've ushered in a fresh, breathtaking attitude to the higher tempos, touring all across the country in Wuhan, Hong Kong and Shenzhen to great acclaim, bringing through new fans with each pinpoint selection. Globally, they continue to thrive, welcoming the likes of Doctor Jeep, DJ Madd, HLZ, Was A Be and many more, picking up heavy support from all corners of the electronic spectrum. Now, they drop their next long-awaited project - 'The Remixes' VA, celebrating some of Unchained's top drops with a slew of on-point remixes, including this scorcher from Detroit legend Sinistarr, who flexes his muscles on remix duties for Grove's epic 'VOTPW'.

DnB Fix 029: HLZ – Blind Slug (Fractale Remix)

Premiere

International Drum & Bass trio Fractale make their mark on Unchained Recordings’ latest remix LP with a heavy hitting remix of HLZ’s half-time banger, Blind Slug.

CHina based label; Unchained Audio celebrates its diverse global network of incredible artists with a 16 track remix LP that showcases some of the best new tracks the label has to offer coupled with some seriously hot remixes from the back catalogue.

The LP is chock-a-block with weight from a selection of some of the best artists the scene has to offer, including Arkaik, Rohaan, Black Barrell, Whiney and Royalston. Many of these are well known household names in the European scene, but it’s not all about Europe, with the likes of China based Radiax and 3ASIC contributing fresh and unique productions on this VA.

Fractale’s gift to the remix LP is a 170bpm flip of HLZ’s track ‘Blind Slug’ - a heavyweight halftime track remixed into a gritty roller with tribal drums. The trio also have one of their own original productions on the release that sees Dutch Producer Subp Yao on the remix.

This year has seen Fractale back with a bang, with a release on Terra Firma (which is well worth checking out) amongst many hints that there is much more to look forwards to.
